During a DOT physical, your hearing and vision are evaluated to ensure you can safely operate a commercial motor vehicle. These tests help confirm that drivers can detect warning signals, read road signs, and respond quickly to hazards on the road. Meeting these standards is a key part of maintaining a valid DOT medical card and staying FMCSA compliant.

For vision, drivers must have at least 20/40 vision in each eye, with or without corrective lenses. You’ll also need a field of vision of at least 70 degrees in each eye and the ability to distinguish red, green, and amber traffic signals. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them to your exam. Failing to meet these requirements could mean a temporary or restricted medical certification until corrective measures are made.

The hearing portion is designed to ensure you can hear a forced whisper from at least five feet away in one ear, with or without a hearing aid. Alternatively, an audiometric test can be used to confirm that your hearing meets FMCSA standards. Drivers who use hearing aids should bring them, along with extra batteries, to the exam.
